Over the years we have received many photographs of our designs, both in the process of construction and being used, from all over the world. We thought that it would be helpful for those contemplating building their own canoe or skiff to show some of these photographs on our web site.

USER GROUP/FORUM FOR SELWAY FISHER BUILDERS & SAILORS
We now have a User Group/Forum on the web for those who are building and using Selway Fisher boats - it has become a forum for those with questions, comments, photos etc., etc concerning all aspects of our design work. The Christine is our most popular canoe design and many have been built all over the world - the above example has been built by the boys and girls of Forres Sandle Manor School under the supervision of Nic Pascoe, Head of Design Technology - see page CA4 of our Complete Catalogue.

The nice example below, of the Christine, has been built by Wendy Couch seen here at it's launch and maiden trip - note the way in which Wendy has fitted storage/buoyancy into the ends of the canoe finishing the decking in a curve.

The example below certainly stands out in a crowd and has been nicely finished by Andy Ward.

Above - one of our Esk 12' sea kayaks under construction. She has the swept up bow of the Eskimo type and flotation compartments in each end. Construction is quick and simple but the shape we have developed on our YachtCAD system is quite sophisticated. Here, 4mm exterior plywood is used keeping cost to a minimum. This is the first 50/50 sailing canoe designed for and built by Bill Serjeant who has one a really nice job in remarkably quick time - she is a development of our Carrick asymmetric canoe but with decking/storage etc and a folding rig which can easily be stowed in the canoe - you can see more photos of her under construction plus more details on Bill's web page at http://www.btinternet.com/~w.serjeant/canoe/canoe_files/canoe2.htm.

An 11'6" Little Kate by Steve Fisher - a lightweight single open canoe for getting up the shallowest of waterways - see page CA3 in our catalogue.

Above - the Explorer 16 and Pete strip planked canoes and the plywood Little Kate all by Jordan Boats at jordanboats.co.uk who also have a plank and frame cutting service.

Below is an example of the 16' Explorer and a 14' version (built simply by reducing the spacing between the moulds on the jig) by Mick Sanderson.

Here is an example of our most popular canoe design - the 15'8" Prospector - this one by Mike Cambray - out on her first trip with all the family - see page CA5 of our catalogue.

Above is a sailing version by Steve Cullis and below left is another by Dave Mercer.

Here we have a Carrick (left) with Optimist rig and a Lillie canoe yawl which has been modifed - mainly by adding 3" (75mm) to the height of the gunwale and making a deeper hull - both boats were built by Alan Davison and used on the UK East Coast.

Robin Waistell of Albatross boats (The Ballyrafter Centre, Lismore, Co. Waterford, Ireland) has built these two kayaks and has just asked us to design a 17' version of the Esk which will be available in early 2005 - Albatross Boats will be producing these boats shortly. House Boats NZ asked us to draw up the Waka Ama and built the beautiful example shown here which was launched with all due blessings and ceremony.

Charles Pecats built this example of our Waterman 16 for fishing and exploring the Australian outback despite the fact that he "lives an alternative lifestyle without 240V power, (in an old Leyland Leopard bus deep in the forest) - she featured in a recent edition of the Australian Amateur Boatbuilder.

Ian Davison built this one and installed a permanent daggerboard and one of the rigs off our Beaver design.

The 15'6" Beaver open canoe which uses the tortured ply technique in her stitch and tape construction - this means that she only has 1 chine and the shape is forced into the ply as she is stitched together - this example has a fixed daggerboard instead of removable leeboards which is easier to use but takes up space permanently inside the hull - the sail is the standard design for the Beaver and also the one detailed in our Manual of Ply/Epoxy canoe Construction.

The 12' Asymmetric Baby Raven by Trevor Palmer. This version gives more buoyancy aft allowing a small canoe to be used by a larger paddler.

The above example is by James Berwick - she is a large capacity canoe for long distance trekking but which can still be car topped.

This example by Martin Padbury - she works as well with 1 as it does with 2 people.

A nice example. seats can be made up in several different ways from a simple plywood bench type to much more sophisticated cane seats - this one has a simple but very effective canvas seat.

This is a simply fitted out example which has been beautifully finished by Bob Higgins - she is a lightweight canoe with tumblehome making her stable and easy to paddle.

A couple of Ravens built by Dr. T. Palmer - the 15'7" Raven is a good choice for the first time builder who wants a large capacity and easily built canoe which is stable and easy to paddle.

Doug Miller built this Ranger as a kayak and modified the deck to make it flat - the ranger plans show 7', 12', 16' and 17' versions plus details for floats.

These 4 photos show the stages in building a strip planked kayak - a strip planked open canoe is similar but without the deck which can be seen here lying separately beside the hull - the top right photo shows the hull having been planked and removed from the jig (shown in the first photo) and now being used with temporary moulds ready to strip the deck. this example of the Sealion is by Gary Watson. A Baby raven being built by Mike and paddled by Katie - she has the same tumblehome as the 14' and 15'7" versions making her both stable and easy to paddle.

We have a large gallery of photographs of Selway Fisher Designs from all over the world and eventually many of these will find their way onto this page - if you have any photographs of our designs during construction, or finished and in the water, please send copies to us and they may find their way onto the Web. Similarly, if you have come across short cuts or new/unusual ways of doing particular jobs in constructing your boat, send them to us and we will put them up onto the page so that other boat enthusiasts can share them.
